Formal training: 1982 - 1983 North Devon College, Art and Design.

I live and work in Barnstaple, North Devon. I am a member of the North Devon Arts, The Society For All Artists and a member of Devon Artist Network. My artwork is regularly exhibited at Docton Court Gallery (Appledore, North Devon), Medina Gallery (Barnstaple, North Devon) and Gallery at 500 Feet (Lynton, North Devon). As an artist, I am often drawn by the aesthetics of a subject. Whenever I see something that is visually interesting, such as a woodland setting, a beautiful building or garden, a landscape or a stunning coastal scene, I will try to capture that subject as perfectly as I can onto canvas (usually using photographs or a sketch as a reference aid) and include as much detail as is necessary, paying particular attention to the quality of the light and to the colours within the scene, until I am satisfied that I have produced a convincing artistic interpretation.

Using acrylics, I mainly paint seascapes, landscapes, woodland river scenes, flowers, and picturesque buildings, usually located in and around North Devon, where I live. From time to time, I also paint semi-abstract pictures and produce artwork inspired by dream imagery.

When it comes to finding inspiration, the beauty and drama of the natural world will always charm and awe me, and that is the main reason why painting landscapes and seascapes hold such appeal for me: it is the challenge of interpreting something that is picturesque from the living, external world and painting it in as naturalistic and as realistic a way as possible.

Other creative interests

In addition to painting, I am also interested in creative writing and enjoy writing spec screenplays, poetry and fiction [see writing samples]. I also have an interest in music and play two musical instruments: the electric guitar and the synthesizer, which I have been playing on-and-off for more than twenty-five years.

In 2007, I released two albums of synthesizer music: A Calm Light and Ocean Splendour. One of the tracks from the Ocean Splendour album received airplay on BBC Radio Devon in 2007 and also received local press coverage at the time of its release.
