About the painting...

I began this painting on Easter Sunday, 24th April 2011. The painting took 27 days to complete and was signed and dated on Friday 20th May 2011. This is a very special piece of artwork which was inspired by a visit to the beautiful gardens at RHS Rosemoor, Torrington, North Devon. The painting was created at my home address.

From the very beginning, it was my intention to create a painting which would not only be vibrant, warm and rich in colouration, but also achieve an impression of realism and depth - a sense of distance within the composition - enabling a person, when viewing the finished work, to perceive this 'distance': almost as if their eyes were journeying through the picture, being invited towards the black iron gates and then up the steps and toward the small sunlit obelisk. The use of light and shade proved crucial towards the achievement of this, and it was important to draw the eyes of the viewer toward the greatest area of light first, and then the eyes would automatically and naturally drift away from the central part of the image to scrutinize the remaining areas of the painting.

Initially, when I began the underpainting, I painted the wall area - which dominates the lower half of the picture - by applying a warm light brown colour, before adding the layers of grey for the stonework. This was to allow the warmth of the underpainting to show through the cool greys and to maintain the overall warmth that was required for the painting to work visually. Simply painting the wall area in grey would have made the lower half of the painting look cool in contrast to the warm colours in the upper half of the painting.

During September 2011, I took part in the Artists' Garden Exhibition (an art exhibition event which is held annually at RHS Rosemoor) and entered a number of paintings - one of which was my third Rosemoor-inspired painting Camellias With Iridescent Turquoise Background.

Beyond the Flowering Camellias... is the second of three Rosemoor-inspired paintings that I completed in 2011. Below are some image details of the painting.

Buying a painting >>

I have a number of original paintings and prints available for sale, and new paintings continue to be added on a monthly basis which I am happy to sell direct to the public. Some of my paintings and prints are currently located at art galleries - in which case, please contact the relevant gallery and they will be happy to provide you with further information about the painting and process your order for you. However, if there is a painting or print that you would like to buy which isn't currently available at a gallery, then I can personally receive your order and mail the painting or print directly to you. Please email me in the first instance and I will be happy to provide you with any information you may require.

All of the paintings currently listed on this website are originals. In regard to ownership of copyright and current copyright law: the copyright in all paintings (i.e. all works created by Mark Woollacott) remain with the artist - even after a painting has been sold or commissioned. Buying the physical painting (or print) does not automatically give someone the ownership to the copyright in the painting (or print) or the right to create reproductions of it. Copyright and reproduction rights in a work can only be transferred legally in writing by the artist (the first owner of copyright).

Colour matching of images on this website - Where possible, I have endeavoured to reproduce the images of my paintings and prints as faithfully as possible on my website and match their colouration with the colours of the original painting. However, because of differences in computer technology (computer screen contrast, brightness and colour settings etc.) this may affect the colouration of the image slightly when viewed on your computer, tablet or mobile phone screen.
