Sophie, Round The Island Race, 2016
Sophie, Round The Island Race, 2016 — a legacy in motion crafted with realistic precision and evocative artistry, this fine art maritime painting immortalizes the classic Falmouth punt Sophie — a vessel steeped in heritage, built in 1892 and still sailing with dignified grace. Depicted racing in the prestigious 2016 Round the Island Race, her sail number 1892L boldly signals a living connection to a bygone era.
A Maritime Painting Composition
The composition captures the dynamic interplay of light, motion, and tradition, presenting Sophie not only as a maritime subject but as a symbol of enduring craftsmanship. Ideal for collectors who value nautical history and contemporary mastery, this painting stands as both a tribute and an investment in Britain's maritime legacy.
Cornish Boat Artwork
As an artist, it was my intention to depict this classic boat in a way that would not only exemplify fine art boat painting and keep alive artistic traditions in maritime painting, but for the painting to become an authentic artistic interpretation of a moment in the boat's incredible history, and as such, make this the perfect artwork for yacht enthusiasts and serious collectors in fine maritime art.
About the boat Sophie 1892L ...
This painting depicts Sophie racing at the 2016 Round The Island Race. Her sail number is 1892L. She was entered into the 2016 Round The Island Race by owners Nicholas and Liz Harvey and came 2nd position in the Gaffers Division 1 on Saturday 2nd July 2016.
Sophie was converted from a Falmouth Quay Punt to a yacht in 1912, from a gaff yawl to a cutter in 1920 and was then given a Bermudan rig in the 1940's. Her rig was returned to gaff cutter in 2006 during a major restoration started in 2001. She was built in 1892 by W.E. Thomas.
