Beginners
Have you ever wondered if you could paint or if you would like to try? Are you looking for things to do during your time in Ilfracombe? Would you like to immerse yourself in a professional art studio, situated close to Ilfracombe's picturesque harbour?
I have been painting for over twenty-five years and it would be my pleasure to take you on this introductory journey into the world of painting. Sometimes we can feel apprehensive to unlock our hidden talents and discover what we are able to create.
I will help you start this journey with guidance and support, in a friendly three hour art class, that will enable you to understand the use of the materials and basic techniques and provide you with the confidence to explore what painting can bring to your life. I will help you to paint a simple coastal scene, inspired by beaches of North Devon. I look forward to meeting you and sharing the joy which painting has brought to me throughout my life.

Artists with some experience
Would you like to immerse yourself in a professional art studio, close to Ilfracombe's beautiful fishing harbour, to reflect and experiment the many forms that landscape and coastal painting has to offer?
This three hour art class will focus on producing an underpainting and putting down the first paint layer in a contemporary coastal scene. This class allows the artist to learn about mixing colours in order to achieve a realistic-looking sky, clouds, sea and sand. You are welcome to bring your own paints if you would prefer (see below for a list of recommended colours).
This class will allow you to have individual guidance and attention that will provide you with a deeper understanding of the techniques and methods employed to enhance and enrich your painting. You are more than welcome to bring along a current project that you are working on or would like to develop further. I look forward to welcoming you into my studio and sharing my knowledge for a rewarding and positive experience.
Individual tuition is also available: if you prefer this option rather than being in a small class, simply pay at the bottom of this page where it says Booking for one person; though please email me first to arrange a suitable date for the tuition before you pay.
If you would like to bring your own acrylic paints I recommend you bring the following colours, which I have always found very good when painting coastal scenes: Titanium White, Prussian Blue, Payne’s Grey, French Ultramarine Blue, Violet-Grey, Warm Grey, Olive Green, Mars Black, Naples Yellow, Indian Red, Burnt Umber. Brands such as Winsor & Newton, Daler Rowney, Schmincke, or Old Holland make very good quality acrylic paints.
How to Book
Please email me at: info@markwoollacott.com to book your place and arrange a convenient date that suits you.
The Studio
The Ilfracombe studio is warm, airy and has plenty of natural light entering it. A french door opens out onto an ornate outdoor balcony beyond, which overlooks a street (busy in the summer season) that leads to a popular quayside lined with independent shops, set next to a picturesque harbour surrounded by spectacular cliffs and hills.
The art class is ideal for the beginner or amateur artist who wishes to improve and broaden their skills and painting technique. I have been teaching adults at art group workshops and giving painting demonstrations to groups of twenty-four or more people since 2014.
The image below shows me giving a painting demonstration for the Lundy Art Group, at Appledore.
Accessibility
The studio is located near to the stunning harbour on the first floor of a lovely old building in Ilfracombe and access to it is by two flights of stairs. There is a stair rail, but unfortunately there is no lift access or wheelchair access. Regrettably, due to the age of the building I cannot offer disabled facilities. Due to the practicalities of the class routine and the studio environment, I am unable to allow pets on the premises, or allow friends, children and family members to accompany you on the class. There is also a no-smoking policy in the building. Thank you for your understanding.
How to book your place on a class.
Please email me at info@markwoollacott.com and I will let you know what class dates are available. You must be over eighteen years of age to attend an art class. Once you have agreed a date, I will reserve your place. Teaching of no more than three participants enables each person to be taught and supported as an individual and allows them to receive a lot of tutor attention and helpful guidance during the class.
If you are visiting from away, there are many excellent and reasonably priced places to stay in and around Ilfracombe, including B & B's, country inns and hotels. Unfortunately, I cannot arrange this for you. It will be your sole responsibility to arrange your own travel, accommodation and meals. As an artist, I only provide an art tuition service to you.
How to find the studio
Once you have booked your place and made your payment, directions to the studio will be provided to you by email.
